Very similar to what we have in Canada where the bulk of the private TV channels, both cable and OTA, are owned by telecom/cable companies like Bell, Rogers, Videotron/Qubecor and Shaw. Comcast owns NBC, Universal Studios and is a large cable TV provider. The vertical integration occurring in the US TMT sector looks like it is following Canada. CTV seems to have very little interest in providing a decent OTA service - they are looking to shutdown a third of their transmitters. This has started to happen here in Canada where one of the main TV networks, CTV, is owned by Bell Canada which is one of the incumbent telephone companies that sells IPTV service and also owns a satellite TV business. NBC is now owned by Comcast - would they prefer you watch their content for free via OTA or with a cable subscription to Comcast? Will they start to shut down some OTA transmitters? I wonder if you will start to see the major networks start to back away from OTA. TV networks may not be keen on having to retrofit everything, again, to be able to support 4K. It doesn't matter how big the country is if there isn't the will to implement the new standards and get stations broadcasting.
